Game Week 20 of the English Premier League

Premier League 2024/25: Week Twenty

The first Premier League gameweek of 2025 concludes Monday 6th January, after another set of unbelievable English soccer games. Now over halfway through this campaign, Liverpool are sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand. They seem like they’ve claimed their throne, but nothing is final until somebody takes home that coveted EPL trophy in May.

Premier League Matchday Twenty: Fixtures

The Premier League delivered another wild ride this week, leaving fans scratching their heads and online bookmakers scrambling for explanations. Liverpool’s rollercoaster performance, with early concessions and a shaky lead, epitomized the unpredictable nature of this season. The top of the table is a dogfight, with every team seemingly capable of beating another. The race for Champions League spots is heating up, with Aston Villa, Newcastle, Manchester City and Bournemouth all winning and only Chelsea left in the dust, dropping points to Crystal Palace.

Crypto Bet Sports is the place to be for an EPL wrap-up. Here’s your gameweek 20 highlights:

Saturday 4th January

Tottenham Hotspurs v Newcastle

1 - 2

Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1, extending their winning streak to five games. Spurs, ravaged by injury and illness, had named their youngest Premier League starting XI in years. They took an early lead through Dominic Solanke’s header, but Newcastle quickly equalized through Anthony Gordon. Alexander Isak then capitalized on a defensive error to put Newcastle ahead. Spurs pushed for an equalizer but couldn’t find a way through, as Newcastle held on for the victory.

Aston Villa v Leicester

2 - 1

Aston Villa roared back to life, edging past a resilient Leicester City 2-1 at Villa Park in Birmingham. After a cagey start, Ross Barkley broke the deadlock, but Stephy Mavididi quickly leveled the score. Just when it seemed the points might be shared, Leon Bailey pounced, securing a vital victory for Unai Emery’s men. Despite a valiant effort, Leicester’s losing streak continued, leaving them deep in the relegation mire. Over halfway to the finish line, Leicester’s chances of salvation are looking bleaker day-by-day. Villa, meanwhile, climbed the EPL table, showcasing their resilience despite a growing injury list.

Bournemouth v Everton

1 - 0

Bournemouth maintained their impressive Premier League form, edging past Everton 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium. David Brooks, introduced from the bench, proved to be the match-winner, volleying home a late cross to secure all three points. Despite dominating possession, Bournemouth struggled to break down a stubborn Everton defense. However, Brooks’ intervention proved decisive, extending the Cherries’ unbeaten run to an impressive eight games. The victory propels Bournemouth closer to the top four, while Everton’s struggles continue. Sean Dyche’s side, lacking a cutting edge, failed to register a single shot on target and now face a daunting run of fixtures against top-tier opposition. Bournemouth, meanwhile, will face a stern test against a string of challenging opponents, but their confidence will be sky-high after this latest triumph.

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

1 - 1

Chelsea mark off their fourth EPL game without a win after a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Cole Palmer’s early goal, set up by a dazzling Jadon Sancho run, had put the Blues on course for victory, but the Blues refused to yield. Jean-Philippe Mateta, a constant threat throughout, punished Chelsea’s failure to kill the game off, tapping home late to deny them three crucial points. Despite dominating possession and creating several promising opportunities, the Blues struggled to convert their dominance into goals. For Palace, this was a point hard-earned. They weathered an early storm from the visitors and gradually grew into the game, capitalizing on Chelsea’s inability to put the game to bed.

Manchester City v West Ham

1 - 5

Manchester City returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, demolishing West Ham United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland, back to his prolific best, scored twice, while Brazilian winger Savinho proved a menace, providing two assists. The hosts started with a bang, taking an early lead through an unfortunate own goal from Vladimir Coufal. Savinho then orchestrated the second, delivering a pinpoint cross for Haaland to head home. The Brazilian wasn’t done, setting up Haaland again for a sublime dinked finish shortly after the break. Phil Foden added a fourth, capitalizing on a West Ham error, before Niclas Fullkrug pulled one back for the visitors. However, the damage was already done. Despite their best efforts, they were ultimately outclassed by a rampant home side. This victory will be crucial for City as they aim to climb back into the top four. With a challenging fixture list ahead, maintaining this level of performance will be key for Guardiola’s men.

Southampton v Brentford

0 - 5

Brentford finally broke their away duck, demolishing Southampton 5-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium in a dominant display. Kevin Schade opened the scoring early on, setting the tone for a Bees masterclass. Southampton struggled to contain Brentford’s attacking threat throughout the match. Bryan Mbeumo bagged a brace, while Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa added late goals to compound the misery for the home side. This heavy defeat leaves Southampton deep in relegation trouble, while Brentford climb the table. Ivan Juric’s side were simply outclassed, offering little resistance against a vibrant and incisive Brentford attack. The visitors controlled the tempo from the outset, creating numerous chances and ultimately running riot in the second half. This resounding victory will be a significant boost for Brentford’s confidence. They will now look to build on this momentum as they aim for a strong finish to the season.

Brighton v Arsenal

1 - 1

Arsenal missed a crucial opportunity to close the gap on Liverpool, held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium. Ethan Nwaneri’s early wonder-goal had put the Gunners in control, but Joao Pedro’s penalty leveled the scores and denied Arsenal all three points. Brighton, despite their recent struggles, showed their quality throughout. Joao Pedro proved to be a constant threat, while their late pressure could have even snatched a dramatic victory. his was a frustrating afternoon for Arsenal. The absences of key players like Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were keenly felt, and the team lacked the fluidity and incisiveness that has characterized their best performances this season.

Sunday 5th January

Fulham v Ipswich

2 - 2

Southampton held firm against Fulham in a gritty goalless draw in their first Premier League match since Russell Martin’s departure. Although they spent a fair share of the soccer game dominating the ball, Fulham were ultimately unable to break down a resolute Southampton defense, who showcased a marked improvement in their defensive organization. This encouraging result will provide a solid foundation for new manager Ivan Juric as he begins his tenure at St. Mary’s Stadium. Fulham, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from this frustrating draw when they face west London rivals Chelsea on Boxing Day.

Liverpool v Manchester United

2 - 2

Manchester United snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw at Anfield, halting Liverpool’s charge towards the title. Lisandro Martinez’s stunning strike gave United the lead, but Cody Gakpo quickly equalized.  Mohamed Salah’s penalty put Liverpool back in front, but Amad Diallo’s late goal denied the Reds three crucial points. Liverpool, despite their dominance, looked shaky at times, allowing United to exploit their right flank repeatedly. The home side struggled to find their rhythm, and Alexander-Arnold’s errors proved costly. While the draw keeps Liverpool comfortably atop the 2024/25 EPL table, their performance raised concerns. With tough fixtures ahead, the title race is far from over. For United, this result provides a much-needed boost after a turbulent period. Amad’s heroics offer a glimmer of hope as Amorim strives to rebuild the fallen giants.

Matchweek Twenty of the 2024/25 Premier League Season

The 2025 Premier League season kicked off with plenty of drama in gameweek 20. Arsenal suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, while Manchester United were outclassed by Nottingham Forest. Crystal Palace’s eight-game losing streak left them in a precarious position, and Manchester City’s commanding performance at the Etihad Stadium has many wondering if their title rivals are beginning to fear the usual New Year surge towards the top. Tottenham Hotspur, revitalized under Ange Postecoglou, have returned to their best form, while Sean Dyche’s tactical switch backfired on Everton. Mohamed Salah is in the form of his life, and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer is rapidly emerging as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
