Premier League Week Three Fixtures
The dust has settled on another thrilling Premier League weekend! Week two of the 2024/25 season delivered a rollercoaster of emotions, with surprising upsets and dominant performances.
Let’s recap the key fixtures and standout moments that made this week one to remember.
Saturday 31st August
Arsenal v Brighton
1 - 1
Arsenal drop their first point of the season after a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. When Bukayo Saka set up Kai Havertz with his second goal of the season in the first half, it seemed like Arsenal were on their way to a hat-trick of victories to start off the Premier League. After the trademark Arsenal start, Brighton’s only defence was to become combative, and it worked. Two bookable offences early in the second half cost the Gunners Declan Rice, and the Seagulls’ Joao Pedro swept in to equalise the score. Brighton pushed hard for a victory in the closing stages, but Arsenal’s defence held strong. With a home fixture against Ipswich town after the break, Brighton are sure to be feeling confident about extending their impressive start to the 2024/25 Premier League.
Nottingham Forest v Wolves
1 - 1
Against all odds, Nottingham Forest remain unbeaten so far in this Premier League season, as Wolves pick up their first point of the season. Chris Wood headered the hosts into the lead after just 10 minutes, but the away team made a swift comeback as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s stunning strike secured a 1-1 draw at the City Ground. Wolves continue to face a run of tough fixtures to open the new season, sitting in the relegation zone as we reach the international break.
Leicester City v Aston Villa
1 - 2
Aston Villa secured their second Premier League victory of the season thanks to Amadou Onana’s early goal, and John Duran’s swift score after his release from the bench. Leicester pushed hard, introducing Stephy Mavididi to assist fellow substitute Facundo Buonanotte in a goal with just 17 minutes left. Leicester were competitive, and they played their part in an entertaining match, but they’re far from safe from relegation. Villa, on the other hand, have now won two out of their three Premier League matches and are in good form for a successful Premier League campaign.
Ipswich Town v Fulham
1 - 1
Ipswich Town finally broke their scoreless streak in the 2024/25 Premier League season, but a late equaliser from Adama Traore left them with a bitter taste in their mouths. Despite a hard-fought battle against Fulham, both teams were unable to capitalise on their chances, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The result leaves Ipswich in 16th place in the table, while Fulham finds themselves level with Chelsea just below the mid-table pack.
Brentford v Southampton
3 - 1
Brentford had something to prove in their first game without Ivan Toney, and with a 3-1 score, they can consider it proven. The home side’s dominant performance was highlighted by Bryan Mbeumo’s brace and Yoane Wissa’s goal, showcasing their continued offensive prowess despite the absence of their star striker. Southampton’s defensive frailties were exposed throughout the match, leading to their third consecutive defeat and a concerning start to their Premier League campaign.
Everton v Bournemouth
2 - 3
AFC Bournemouth pulled off an astonishing comeback at Goodison Park, defeating Everton 3-2. After falling behind early in the second half, Bournemouth’s late goals from Antoine Semenyo, Lewis Cook, and Luis Sinisterra stunned the home crowd and secured a dramatic victory. The win catapulted Bournemouth up to seventh place in the table, while Everton remains at the bottom of the standings.
West Ham v Manchester City
1 - 3
Erling Haaland’s scoring spree continued as he netted another hat-trick, leading Manchester City to a comfortable 3-1 win over West Ham United. The Norwegian striker’s clinical finishing and City’s overall dominance were too much for West Ham to handle, despite their valiant efforts. With this victory, City solidified their position at the top of the Premier League table, while West Ham faced another setback in their quest for a successful campaign.
Sunday 1st September
Chelsea v Crystal Palace
1 - 1
In a thrilling London derby, Crystal Palace staged a dramatic comeback to snatch a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Eberechi Eze’s stunning strike cancelled out Nicolas Jackson’s early goal, ensuring a share of the spoils and providing Palace with their first point of the season. The draw was a major boost for Palace, who had been struggling to find their form.
Newcastle United v Tottenham
2 - 1
Newcastle United’s late heroics secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes’ early strike gave the Magpies a halftime advantage, but Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson leveled the score in the second half. However, Alexander Isak’s decisive goal in the final minutes sealed the deal for Newcastle, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season and leaving Tottenham to rue their missed opportunities.
Manchester United v Liverpool
0 - 3
The game everybody is talking about. In a resounding statement of intent, Liverpool crushed their rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford. The Reds’ midfield mastery and clinical finishing were on full display as they dominated the match from start to finish. Luis Diaz’s brace and Mohamed Salah’s goal showcased Liverpool’s attacking prowess, leaving United’s defense exposed and struggling to cope. United’s midfield was outclassed, unable to gain control of the game or provide adequate support to their forward line. The defeat marked a significant setback for United, who have now lost three of their four league matches this season. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s perfect start to the campaign solidified their position as a serious contender for the Premier League title.
