Saturday 5th October
Crystal Palace v Liverpool
0 - 1
Liverpool’s resolve to stay at the top was clear in their narrow 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Diogo Jota’s early goal was enough to secure the win for the Reds, but it could’ve been a different story had Crystal Palace’s Eddie Nketiah’s goal been allowed. Palace asserted themselves throughout the game, with Alisson having to make a trio of saves to keep the Eagles at bay. It was always going to be a hard task for Palace to get their first win of the Premier League season, especially if they wanted it against Liverpool, but after last seasons defeat, you can’t blame them for hoping. Overall, it was a gritty performance that spoke volumes about their ambitions for the title – now they’ve got it, the Reds are not going to let anyone snatch that top spot from them this season. Not without a fight.Â
Arsenal v Southampton
3 - 1
Arsenal bagged themselves their 400th at-home win in the Premier League as they took Southampton down 3-1. The Saints took an early lead through Cameron Archer, but the Gunners’ firepower proved too much to handle. Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka combined to secure a vital three points, keeping Arsenal’s title hopes alive.Â
Brentford v Wolves
5 - 3
In a thrilling Premier League clash, Brentford’s attacking firepower exploded, leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers stunned in a 5-3 goal-fest. The Bees’ dominance was on full display from the outset, with Nathan Collins heading them ahead and Christian Norgaard and Ethan Pinnock adding crucial goals. Wolves fought back with goals from Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen, but Brentford’s relentless attack proved too much to handle. Fabio Carvalho sealed the win with a late goal, while Rayan Ait-Nouri scored a consolation for Wolves. Brentford’s victory moves them into the Premier League’s top half, while Wolves remain at the bottom of the table.
Leicester v Bournemouth
1 - 0
At long last, Leiecester secured their first Premier League win of the season, defeating AFC Bournemouth 1-0. Admittedly, Bournemouth improved significantly in the second half, with Lewis Cook’s free-kick ruled out for offside and both Illia Zabarnyi and Dango Ouattara hitting the woodwork. However, they were unable to find an equaliser, leaving them in 13th place, two points above Leicester City who moved up to 15th. Buonanotte’s performance was crucial for Leicester City, showcasing his skill and creativity. The young Argentine’s goal and overall play were instrumental in securing the victory. Bournemouth’s failure to capitalise on their second-half dominance was a missed opportunity, as they continue their journey in the Premier League.
Man City v Fulham
3 - 2
Manchester City pulled off a last-minute escape at the Etihad, edging out Fulham 3-2 in a thrilling Premier League clash. Mateo Kovacic stole the show with a brace, while Jeremy Doku added another goal to seal the win. Fulham started strong, but missed a bunch of golden chances to extend their lead. City fought back, with Kovacic’s goals and Doku’s clincher turning the game around. Rodrigo Muniz’s late goal added some drama, but City held on for the victory.
West Ham v Ipswich
4 - 1
West Ham United unleashed a torrent of attacking power, overwhelming Ipswich Town 4-1 in a dominant display at London Stadium. The Hammers’ victory marked their first home win of the Premier League season and a much-needed boost after a disappointing run of form. Michail Antonio got the party started with a goal after just 48 seconds, but Ipswich’s Liam Delap responded quickly to level the score. However, West Ham’s dominance was clear, and they regained the lead through Mohammed Kudus just before halftime. The second half saw West Ham continue their onslaught, with Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta adding to the scoreline. The Hammers’ attacking prowess was on full display, leaving Ipswich’s defense scrambling to contain the onslaught.
Everton v Newcastle
0 - 0
Newcastle United were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton at Goodison Park, despite Anthony Gordon’s penalty miss. The former Everton player had been Newcastle’s spot-kick hero last week, but his failure to convert this time cost the Magpies. Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved Gordon’s penalty, much to the delight of the home fans. Dominic Calvert-Lewin also felt he should have had a penalty in the second half, but referee Craig Pawson waved away his appeals. The draw keeps Newcastle in the top six, while Everton move up, further clear of the relegation zone.
Sunday 6th October
Aston Villa v Man United
0 - 0
Aston Villa and Manchester United played out a disappointing 0-0 draw at Villa Park. Bruno Fernandes came closest to breaking the deadlock with a powerful free-kick that rattled the crossbar. Marcus Rashford, who was lucky not to be sent off after his foul on Leon Bailey, had chances, and so did Youri Tielemans, but neither team could find the breakthrough they so desperately needed. The draw leaves Villa in fifth place and United in 14th, a disappointing position for a club of United’s stature. While Villa have extended their unbeaten run, they’re sure to be hoping for a more inspiring performance in their next match. For United, the pressure is mounting on manager Erik ten Hag as his team continues to struggle.
Chelsea v Nottingham Forest
1 - 1
Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances for themselves. Chris Wood gave Forest the lead, but Noni Madueke quickly equalized. James Ward-Prowse was sent off for Forest late in the match, but Chelsea could not find a winner. The draw keeps Chelsea in fourth place, while Forest remain in ninth. Chelsea will be frustrated not to have won, but they can take solace in their dominant performance. For Forest, the draw is a positive result against a top-four team.
Brighton v Tottenham
3 - 2
Brighton and Hove Albion are once again proving their strength under manager Fabian Hurzeler, beating Tottenham 3-2 at the American Express Stadium. They’ve not only begun the season on a high, but they’ve also managed to beat two of the traditional top 6 sides in their opening 7 matches. Their spirited 3-2 comeback win over Tottenham from 2 goals down really sums up the self-belief and confidence this side has. Currently sitting 6th, Brighton are definitely in the conversation for a top 4 spot this season, and their performances suggest they won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
