Premier League Opening Weekend Fixtures

The 2024/25 Premier League season kicked off with a bang, delivering a weekend full of unexpected results and thrilling encounters. From shock upsets to dominant displays, the opening round of fixtures left fans on the edge of their seats.

Let’s delve into the key moments and standout performances that defined this unforgettable weekend.

Friday 16th August

Man Utd v Fulham

1 - 0

Manchester United escaped Fulham’s defensive fortress with a last-gasp win. Despite dominating possession, the Red Devils couldn’t find the breakthrough until Zirkzee’s late heroics. While their defence held firm, questions remain about their midfield creativity and attacking efficiency.

Saturday 17th August

Ipswich Town v Liverpool

0 - 2

Ipswich tried to disrupt the game’s flow, making it difficult for Liverpool to play their usual style, and they had them in the first half! Ultimately, though, they were no match for Salah’s skill and vision as he set up Jota’s first goal, and then scored his own just five minutes later. Slot’s philosophy seems to be building on Klopp’s legacy, and it seems to be working.

Arsenal v Wolves

2 - 0

Not a minute was wasted for Arsenal, starting the season on a strong, confident foot. Even when they faced a brief period of difficulty, the win was secure. Their playing style, reminiscent of their manager’s playing days, bodes well for the rest of the season.

Everton v Brighton

0 - 3

Brighton’s decision to appoint 31-year-old Heurzler gave them the youngest head coach in Premier League history, and it gave the fans plenty to fear. However, the loss of Amadou Onana this Summer proved to be too much for Everton, as Brighton’s intense pressing and quick counterattacks saw them lose 3-0, leaving Brighton fans at Heurzler’s feet.

Newcastle United v Southampton

1 - 0

Despite playing with a man down, Newcastle showed great determination and resilience against the newly promoted Southampton. Maybe they were motivated by the home-town support, or perhaps they simply took advantage of Southampton’s mistakes. Either way, their performance was reminiscent of the team’s spirit under Rafael Benitez, and it bodes well for them going forward. Southampton, unfortunately, are now favourites to be relegated this season.

Nottingham Forest v AFC Bournemouth

1 - 1

Bournemouth’s new signing, Evanilson, proved his worth as they came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest. Despite a strong start from Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth’s attacking firepower, led by Evanilson, ultimately prevailed. The Cherries’ success this season will depend on their ability to maintain their momentum and capitalise on their new signing’s potential.

West Ham v Aston Villa

1 - 2

Both West Ham and Aston Villa are well-equipped with strong defenders, like Torres and Killman, leading to a match full of defensive duels. This was, arguably, the most exciting game of the Premier League opening weekend, with two evenly matched teams and a score that could have gone either way. Ultimately, the victory was Villa’s, but both teams have the potential to be strong contenders in the 2024/25 Premier League.

Sunday 18th August

Brentford v Crystal Palace

2 - 1

Brentford remain unbeaten in their opening game in all four of their Premier League seasons as they force Crystal Palace’s first Premier League defeat in 8 games. Mbeumo gave the Bees their lead, firing the ball past Henderson in the 29th minute. It took them almost 50 minutes to follow it up, but Crystal Palace’s defence wasn’t enough to stop Wissa securing the win this time.

Chelsea v Man City

0 - 2

Defending champions, Manchester City, dominated in their game against Chelsea on Sunday. Kevin De Bruyne, the star midfielder, played the entire match. The defence, led by Akanji and Gvardiol, was strong. Chelsea tried to score, but their attempts were unsuccessful. Even Savinho’s injury didn’t slow them down as they shot to victory.

Sunday 18th August

Leicester City v Tottenham

1 - 1

Leicester City’s Premier League return ends in a 1-1 draw with Spurs, despite a dominant start for them. Though they dominated possession, Spurs struggled to convert their chances, while Leicester capitalised on a lapse in defence to equalise through Jamie Vardy. A disappointing end for both teams, especially with Bentancur leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

And that concludes the opening weekend of the Premier League 2024/25!
